The Doomsday Clock is a silly reaction to deadly serious things. Created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947, it supposedly tracks mankind's proximity to The End, with midnight representing the destruction of civilization. In 1953, after the first H-bomb tests, we were two minutes from midnight; in 1991, at the end of the Cold War, we were 17 minutes to the hour. We have now moved from 11:53 to 11:55, thanks to nuclear proliferation and climate change. The minute hand's position is determined by a panel of scientists, who surely realize that the world's dangers cannot be measured with numeric precision.
