But it is still a surprise to see how youthful the group's new CE, Clive Thomson, appears when he joins me at Mastrantonio, canteen for many Johannesburg business people.

Thomson has just taken over from Tony Phillips, who retired two years early when the board decided it was time to break up and refocus the group. Tony didn't agree with the new strategy, Thomson says. …
