Jan. 25--ORANGE CITY -- State auditors have criticized the Volusia County school district for lax control over cellular telephones, saying in a new report that no one knows how much is being spent on the devices, how many have been issued or whether users are making personal calls on the public dime.
Although district officials have since released a list showing that 360 phones are issued or available to employees, Volusia was the only Central Florida district asked by the Orlando Sentinel that could not say how much it spends on cell phones.
Lake was the only other area district that allows departments and schools to control cell-phone purchase and use.
