An accomplished and prize-winning poet, novelist, storyteller and painter, N. Scott Momaday likes the counterpoint and tension between painting and writing.

"Writing is very concentrated and painting is almost relaxing," he said in a recent telephone interview.

Painting allows his mind to wander to other areas, including sports on television -- he's a "great fan" of the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Cubs and the University of Arizona Wildcats basketball team. Writing requires his full attention.

As a young writer, Momaday won the Pulitzer Prize for his first novel, "House Made of Dawn." It …
