MANY PARENTS whose children have learned a musical instrument will be familiar with the "Suzuki method". It is a system designed to inculcate Western music performance for Asian students. The method is predicated on imitation and rote learning that is completely at odds with Western traditions, and specifically designed to be non-reflective, non-analytical and unquestioning; in short, an Asian way for obtaining excellence without understanding. If this sounds a little harsh, one needs to spend some time in China to witness the emergence of a mind-bogglingly successful economy developing within a quasi-medieval, authoritarian and conformist Confucian society.
