Jan. 21--With pomp, circumstance and the snip of a ceremonial ribbon, the Wal-Mart Supercenter that more than a year ago divided Conover opened for business Friday.
As the eastern sky brightened and the morning mist dissipated, a curious crowd of more than 50 gathered outside the entrance to the store's food section about 7:30 a.m., just before the opening festivities began.
"I feel like it's the day after Thanksgiving," said Elizabeth Fedele, 42, of Newton, who held a can of Dr. Thunder -- Wal-Mart's version of Dr. Pepper -- as she waited with her son Chuck, 18.
