At the start of 2004, Bill Gates made a rash promise: with Microsoft's might, the problem of spam could be elminated in two years. We're all used to Microsoft's deadlines slipping, but a solution to the problem of spam seems further off than ever. The number of junk messages has increased, filtering techniques that seemed to catch most of the rubbish a couple of years ago no longer work, and many of us spend more time than ever filtering the junk from our mailboxes.
