At a fall NCAA meeting, staff and experts discussed the issue of transgendered varsity student athletes.
Last year, a track and field athlete at Bates College ME "came out" as transgendered. The 11-time all-American thrower, who was born female, cited a preference to be referred to as a male.
The NCAA currently has no policy related to transgendered student-athletes, but is opening a dialog about the issue. It now follows the gender listed on the student athlete's state identification documents and relies on the school's designation of that student.
