Jan. 14--One of the community's best-known churches is planning to open a private school this August in northwest Charlotte. Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, a leader in the African American community since the church was founded in 1890, will operate the school at its former sanctuary on Beatties Ford Road. A retired Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools principal who has experience with school start-ups will direct the effort.
