Jan. 12--The events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. begin today. Here is a sampling of events throughout the metro area throughout Monday:
Today:
MLK Jazz Concert: At 7:30 p.m. Peace Action of Michigan will host a jazz concert at First United Methodist Church of Troy. The church is at 6363 Livernois. Saturday:
17th Annual Optimists Breakfast: The Optimist Club Foundation of Central Detroit presents a celebration of the life of Dr. King, Jr. 8:30 a.m. at Fellowship Chapel, 7707 W. Outer Drive. Tickets are $20. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call Dr. Marvin Davis, foundation president: 313-893-7820 and leave a message.
Canton King Celebration: The Village Theatre at Cherry Hill will hold a full-length dance performance by Nadanta troupe titled "Ahimsa: The Path of Peace" at 8 p.m. The Village Theatre is at 50400 Cherry Hill in Canton. Tickets are $15 each. Call 734-394-5300 and press 3 for tickets.
MLK Read-In: From 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Peace Action of Michigan will host a Read-In at the Grosse Pointe Public Library in honor of Martin Luther King. All ages. The Grosse Pointe Public Library is located at 15175 E. Jefferson.
Drum Major For Peace: At 2 p.m. Detroit Children's Museum will present "Drum Major for Peace," a special event celebrating the life of Dr. King. $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers. The museum is at 6134 Second Ave. Registration is required: 313-873-8100 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Oakland County:
One World, One Family: The Huron Valley MLK Day Committee will host a celebration in observance of Martin Luther King Day. At 7 p.m., the program "Speak Out" will be held at Milford High School, with a short film, poetry and open mic, community awards and a candlelight vigil. Milford High is located at 2380 Milford Road. Peace Walk: Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence will host the city's annual Day of Peace on Jan. 14.
Lawrence and the City Council will celebrate the event starting at 1 p.m. at the Southfield Parks and Recreation Building, Room 115, 26000 Evergreen Road. Brunch will be served.
