Jan. 12--Moving Portola Middle School students to either Castro or Fairmont elementaries would lead to an increase in crime and more traffic in those neighborhoods, residents say.

Those were just a couple of the concerns raised by an angry crowd of more than 200 -- many from the Castro and Fairmont communities -- at a West Contra Costa school district meeting this week on the proposed Portola relocation.

The residents went to the Harding Elementary auditorium in El Cerrito on Wednesday to give officials an earful and demand to know why the district did not do more to notify residents of the plans sooner.
