Private firm wants to run some Dade, Broward schools. (Edison Project; Dade County and Broward County, Florida; public elementary schools)

MIAMI -- The Edison Project, a for-profit venture that wants to manage public schools, has tentative plans to operate as many as three elementary schools in Dade County.

It has also begun talks with Broward County.

New York-based Edison Project is the brainchild of Christopher Whittle, the media entrepreneur and head of financially troubled Whittle Communications.

"There is a serious consideration of a partnership with the Edison Project for two or three elementary schools in Dade to begin in the 1995-1996 school year," said Walt McCarroll, vice president of public school partnerships at Edison.
