TEL will fail unless EU collaborates
Laura Smith
Museums, libraries, publishers and European Commission officials have called for better collaboration between national libraries to ensure an ambitious project to create a Europe-wide digital library comes to fruition.
The appeal came at a conference in Estonia to discuss the future of The European Library (TEL), an internet portal offering access to the books, magazines and journals of the 45 national libraries of Europe from anywhere in the world.
The project, which began five years ago, is intended to be the starting point for a wider European digital library project encompassing museums, archives and other organisations that hold cultural information.
The two-day conference was held to examine how a European Union-funded project aimed at helping the national libraries from the new member states to become full members of TEL could help bring together organisations to establish a European digital library.
