Where's portal technology going?
' book review
It is difficult to judge a book like Andrew Cox's Portals given that no commonly agreed definition exists of the role of this technology.
But one thing is for sure: this heavy-duty tome would be a lot more suited to publication in an electronic environment rather than print.
The book's 17 chapters bring together an unsurprising collection of essays (with a sprinkling of superficial case studies) that cover portals in a variety of settings, but mostly academic and corporate environments.
Only in chapter five is the critical issue of user needs analysis and evaluation discussed. Although the chapter offers a good overview of the subject and is complemented by the subsequent chapter on managing portal services, greater prominence of both these subjects would have enhanced this book.
