Jan. 8--Former Detroiter Patti Smith is among the 2007 inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, hall officials announced Monday.
The punk poet, who moved to St. Clair Shores in the late 1970s after marrying Detroit guitarist Fred Smith, is among a class of honorees that includes seminal alt-rock group R.E.M., hard rock titan Van Halen, rap godfather Grandmaster Flash, and quintessential girl-group the Ronettes.
Smith returned to her hometown New York in the late 1990s, several years after Fred Smith's death.
