BIR misses mark, but hits own target.

THE BUREAU OF INTERNAL REVENUE missed the tax-collection target set by the national government for 2006, posting a P31-billion shortfall, because of factors which it claimed were beyond its control.

The BIR yesterday reported that it collected P644.4 billion in taxes in 2006, against the P675.4 billion official target set by the interagency Development Budget and Coordination Committee (DBCC), the agency tasked with setting economic policies and targets for the national government.

In 2002, the BIR recorded a shortfall of P53 billion.
