The war of the doors
Responding to the idea of a four-door or wagon Mustang (News, Dec. 18): Ford did this to the T-Bird and it failed miserably, likewise the Cougar. Chrysler was successful with Charger because it created an exciting car. I heard complaints that it should be a coupe, but the style made it a success. GM's only foray into adding doors that I remember was the Nomad. If Ford would rename and rebadge the sedan and wagon as Mavericks, that may work. Despite detractors of the Maverick, it was dependable and economical. Maybe there'll be another Shelby Maverick.

Mustang needs to maintain its identity: two-door hardtop or convertible. If I need a four-door sedan, there are other options available within Ford. I have a '94 Mustang GT, a '98 Ford F-150 and an '03 Focus.

This will cheapen the Mustang, while Ford has names it could dust off and reuse that would fit this type of car, like Falcon, as the 'Stang was made from it. When Ford expands a car like Mustang, in a few years it's just a name on the car. Ford needs to keep the Mustang what that car was and is again.
