In July, you might remember reading an NWHN Alert about reports of blood clots in women who use the Ortho Evra contraceptive patch (see http://www.nwhn.org/alerts/alerts_details.php?aid=42). According to reports filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), at least twelve women who were using the contraceptive patch had died of blood clots. While this was worrisome news, it raised more questions than it answered. Without more research, no one could say whether the patch caused these deaths or whether the risk of having a life-threatening blood clot was higher with the patch than with other hormonal contraceptive methods.
