Dec. 20--A 19-year-old Deerfield Beach woman is accused of violently shaking her 3-month-old daughter, leaving the child with severe and permanent brain damage. Jeancine Innocent is charged with one count of aggravated child abuse. She was in the main Broward County jail on Tuesday on $7,500 bond. Doctors said her daughter would be in a vegetative state if she survives, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. If the child dies, the charge could be raised to murder.
BSO sees several cases of shaken babies a year, BSO spokesman Jim Leljedal said. "The sad thing is this happens so often," Leljedal said. The baby was Innocent's only child, he said. The baby's father Stanley Joseph told Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4 that he previously asked Innocent if she hurt their daughter. 'She was like, 'Honey I would never do such a thing like that,' " Joseph told CBS 4. Deputies began their investigation after Innocent called 911 on Dec. 13 saying her daughter fell in the shower and wasn't moving or breathing, according to BSO.
