The Pentagon DONALD RUMSFELD has had some rough sledding lately, and I ask him how his spirits are. "Good," he says. Although, after a shoulder operation, his left arm is in a sling, and "I haven't been able to play squash for a week."

Rumsfeld says, "I don't think there's ever been a war where a person in my job"--secretary of defense--"was popular. I can't think of one. It's a tough business, and it's an ugly business." He adds that "a couple of folks" have been calling for his resignation since April '01, "before the war ever started." I say I can't remember what he was doing then. "Well," he replies, "obviously not the right thing."
