Dec. 19--Some shoppers in Cooper City spent a lot more than they expected today when the Broward Sheriff's Office cited them for parking in spots set aside for people with disabilities.
BSO Sgt. Robert Beckmann and parking enforcement volunteer Bill Munro searched for scofflaws at the Wal-Mart shopping center and the Countryside Shops, both on Flamingo Road in Cooper City.
They cited four violators today, in an enforcement effort that will continue through Sunday.
"We realize that with the holidays upon us, it's going to be worse," said Beckmann, addressing media alerted to the crackdown. "We want to make sure that people who are disabled and are entitled to the spaces have them available so they can complete their shopping."
The blue-and-white disabled tag that hangs from the rearview mirror is issued to an individual, not to a vehicle, Beckmann said. The individual must be in the car when the tag is being used.
Today, three of four ticketed drivers at the Wal-Mart Plaza said they were using a relative's tag.
