Dec. 18--HAMPTON -- In Teresa D'Amico's fourth-grade classroom at Forrest Elementary School, students bustled around the room as they worked on book reports. Their voices overlapped as they chattered among themselves.

Male voices. Only male voices. D'Amico, the only female in the room, teaches one of three single-sex classes at the school on Todds Lane in Hampton. Forrest began offering single-sex classes for third-grade boys during the 2005-06 school year in hopes of raising achievement and decreasing discipline problems. The results exceeded expectations, Principal Sherry Buchanan said, so the school added a fourth-grade all-boys class and a third-grade all-girls class in September.

Private schools have offered single-sex classes for years and the number of public schools that do so is growing. In 1995, only three public schools in the nation offered single-sex classes in subjects other than health, P.E. and music. This fall, more than 250 do. Fifty-one public…
