Dec. 18--On a recent morning, Edie Bowers loaded books and materials into boxes while another teacher taught her class. Bowers, a Fairlawn Elementary teacher, had about three weeks before everything would be moved to a brand new school. She had packed about 75 boxes -- and had many left to fill. Penny Sengpiel tried her best to keep Bowers' 22 third-graders engrossed in learning about coins. But some were more interested in what Bowers was doing in the back of the room. "This isn't funny," an exasperated Sengpiel said to an 8-year-old student. "You aren't paying one bit of attention to me. This is a school!"

Teaching amid the chaos of moving can prove challenging, but Bowers and her colleagues at Fairlawn Elementary gave it their best. "We have to have controlled order," said Bowers, a 20-year instructor and one-time Akron Teacher of the Year. "That's the challenge." Today, Bowers and the other Fairlawn teachers begin teaching in the brand new Resnik Community Learning Center, 65 N. Meadowcroft Drive, where the 77-year-old Fairlawn Elementary stood. The building -- the first new school to open in Akron in nearly 30 years -- was named in honor of Judith Resnik, the fallen…
