Joan is a devout Catholic businesswoman in her thirties who, after years of success as a corporate sales representative, recently assumed a managerial position at corporate headquarters. She thereby became the corporation's first female middle manager. In her new capacity, she supervises the profitability and the personnel of a sales unit.

Before accepting the position, Joan investigated the unit and found that most of the people assigned to it were older males who had not been held accountable for their job performances for years.
