Rovers and aluminum
The last sentence of your Nov. 27 Land Rover design story said the company "would have to certify whether aluminum can handle the rigors of heavy-duty off-road use.'' The Hummer H1, however, features an all-aluminum platform, employed successfully as an off-road vehicle.
Mike Bucala, GM design and process engineer
Rovers had "aluminium'' body panels before. On a 1966 Mideast job I hit a cow with a Land Rover, and the mudguard was light alloy. Other than a "moo'' from the cow and a dirty look as she walked off, she was unhurt. Not so for the Rover. Our oil company bought the cow at a premium price when the owner claimed she would no longer give milk, and (of course) she was his prize cow. Then, when we drove to and from the airstrip, the owner shooed his cows onto the road, trying to sell us another one.
