While there remains optimism about a possible reconciliation between the Champ Car and Indy Racing League series, we're hearing little such talk regarding the American Le Mans Series and the NASCAR-affiliated Grand-Am series. Certainly 2006 gave Grand-Am reason to be optimistic: TV ratings for the races on Speed TV increased 4 percent, and there was an 8 percent jump in households and viewership. In-person attendance increased 25 percent for 2006.
Part of the attention comes from periodic appearances by big-name drivers, and the series expects that to continue, with personalities like IRL champ Sam Hornish and NASCAR star Jeff Gordon expected to race at the 2007 Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Three wins in the 14-race season gave Krohn Racing's Jorg Bergmeister his first Daytona Prototype title, and TRG teammates Marc Bunting and Andy Lally took their second GT title in three years with five wins in 13 races in their Pontiac GTO, which was also good enough for a team championship.
