It's difficult to reinvent a 32-year-old racing series, but that's essentially what happened during the 2006 season of the Champ Car Atlantic Championship.
Part of the appeal came from the successful combination of an all-new car, the Swift 016.a, powered by a new engine, the 300-horsepower, 2.3-liter Mazda-Cosworth four-cylinder, which replaced series sponsor and engine supplier Toyota. The cars were quick, handsome and dependable, and racing was invariably tight. The cars will remain unchanged for 2007-no surprise, since there were seven different winners in the 12-race series-with the only difference being a switch in tire suppliers, as Cooper replaces Yokohama.
Perhaps the most publicity-friendly aspect of the series, though, is the $2 million prize awarded to the 2006 series champion, to be used toward a ride in the Champ Car series in 2007. The winner was French rookie Simon Pagenaud, a protege of Champ car champ Sebastien Bourdais, who took the championship in the final race by just 16 points over Graham Rahal, son of former Champ Car ...
