The Bodine family of Chemung, New York, needed 1853 starts spread over 25 years to finally get a NASCAR championship. Todd did what older brothers Geoffrey and Bret never could when he won the 2006 Craftsman Truck Series title in a performance that was impressive most of the year but worrisome down the stretch.
"Toadie'' led the standings for the last 21 races, moving to No. 1 by winning round four at Madison, Illinois, late in April. Nextel Cup star Mark Martin had led until then, fueled by victories at Daytona and Fontana, a second at Atlanta and a fourth at Martinsville. When he skipped the Gateway International Raceway event, it opened a door that Bodine quickly entered and closed behind him. His margin ranged from 12 points after Madison to 182 after the August race near Indianapolis. When it dipped to 79 points with four races to go, the runaway suddenly became much too uncomfortable. But Bodine, crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. and team owners Rick, Bill and Steve Germain avoided a collapse by rebuilding their lead to 112 points entering the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November.
