The rule book calls it "Rewarding of Equalizing Weight Assigned to Reduce Driver Sensitivity,'' but competitors know it by the acronym REWARDS, and in the SCCA Speed World Challenge series, it works both ways: To equalize competition, top-finishing cars must add weight, while backmarkers are allowed to remove weight.
Artificial though it is, it works, allowing for close racing in the GT class between cars as diverse as series champ Lawson Aschenbach's Team AXA Financial Porsche 911 GT3, runner-up Lou Gigliotti's Chevrolet Corvette and third-place finisher Andy Pilgrim's Cadillac CTS-V.
The fact Aschenbach's championship came in his first season made history in the Speed GT division, as no rookie has ever won the overall honors. He did it mostly through consistency, as he won only one race but finished every race in the top 10.
