To say the IRL had its best Indy Pro Series season in 2006 is no stretch.
With fields up by three cars per race and a tripled prize fund, the development series realized a record number of winners (seven in 12 races) and its most interesting title race since its 2002 inception.
Jay Howard won the title by four points over Jonathan Klein, but Howard often was overshadowed.
Jeff Simmons opened the year by scoring the second-closest finish in series history, a 0.0199-second win at Homestead-Miami Speedway for his fifth victory in eight races. That run led IRL team owner Bobby Rahal to hire him to replace Paul Dana, who was killed in a crash during pre-race practice at Homestead.
At St. Petersburg the next week, Raphael Matos swept the Pro Series' first doubleheader weekend. Reigning series champion Wade Cunningham sat out with appendicitis, which likely cost him a second championship.
