Dec. 8--Before immigrating to the United States from India in 1976, Raman Patel was a civil engineer.
"But when I got here, friends told me: Eventually you're going to end up in the hotel business," Patel recalled.
They were right.
Patel now runs one of the fastest growing motel chains in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.
Construction on his fifth motel -- Holiday Inn Express & Suites at 4300 Bangs Ave. in Modesto -- is expected to finish in time for a March 27 opening.
The $12 million complex will have 95 rooms, including 35 suites, on three floors. Modesto's Huff Construction Co. is building the 54,000-square-foot project.
Patel built his first motel in 1993 in Modesto, then built one in Lathrop in 1996, Westley in 1998 and Stockton in 2001.
