Save on Essentials Like ...

... Your phone. Dump your landline, and make your cell your only phone. That'll save you a good $300 a year. Other ways to cut your calling expenses: Instead of handing over about $1.50 for dialing directory assistance, call 800-FREE411 instead.

... Text messages. Buy them in bulk. You'll pay as little as a penny each, compared with 5 to 15 cents for pay-as-you-go messages.

... Credit cards. Right now, you can get rates as low as zero percent for a 6- to 12-month introductory period. That's enough to make a serious dent in your debt. Open your mail to find offers that look intriguing (don't cancel your old card until after you've swapped for a new one), or call your current credit-card company and ask for a lower interest rate. (Aim for around 10 percent.) If they think they might lose your business, there's a chance they'll give you a better rate.

... Your car. Lower the rate on your loan by refinancing--you'll save up to $30 a month. Go to bankrate.com to find the best deals on used-car loans--and then just pick up the phone.

... Gas. Find the cheapest gallons in your hood at gaspricewatch.com.
