* There Are Many Types of HPV, but Only Some May Be Problematic
HPV is an umbrella term for more than 100 viral types, all transmitted through skin-on-skin contact. About 70 of these types result in common body warts. "Some types cause warts on your hands, others on your feet, and some even on your eyeballs," explains Diane Harper, MD, director of the Gynecologic Cancer Prevention Research Group at Dartmouth Medical School.
At least 30 types of HPV are mainly sexually transmitted-you get them via messing around with an infected guy. But about half of these types are no big deal. "You'd never know you were infected because there are no signs, and your immune system fights off the virus within a few years anyway," Dr. Harper says.
The remaining types are a different story. Two cause 90 percent of all cases of genital warts, tiny bumps on the thin skin of your southern regions. Even more alarming are the 15 or so HPV types that, if left unchecked, may lead to cervical cancer.
