Relegence deal puts AOL in news management market
Laura Smith
AOL is the latest consumer company to enter the growing market for news management, with its acquisition of Relegence, the US-based financial news and information company.
The deal, signed for an undisclosed sum, will allow AOL to use specialist technology developed by Relegence to offer its customers instant news updates from a wide range of sources.
The global internet service provider is only the latest consumer-oriented company to enter the news aggregation market. Google News and Google News Archive are seen as challengers to established content providers such as Factiva and LexisNexis.
Relegence monitors, indexes and filters more than 20,000 news sources, including news wires, print media, TV and cable networks, corporate websites and web bulletin boards. Its technology can deliver to a desktop information relevant to the user's search criteria the second that data is published, regardless from where it originates.
