Dec. 1--Journal Register Co. of Yardley said today it had agreed to sell two of its New England community newspapers to Gatehouse Media for about $70 million in cash.

The newspapers are The Herald News in Fall River, Mass., and the Taunton Daily Gazette in Taunton, Mass. The deal, which is expected to close this month, will include five non-daily publications.

Journal Register said it expects to record a pre-tax gain on the sale of approximately $46 million. The after-tax cash proceeds are expected to be approximately $50 million and will be used primarily…
