Marco Polo était un navigateur et explorateur italien, probablement né à Venise vers 1254. Il est l'un des plus célèbres Occidentaux qui aient voyagé sur la Route de la Soie. Malgré le caractère périlleux de ses voyages, il s'en est toujours sorti sain et sauf. Marco Polo était un voyageur dans l'âme, multipliant les destinations et ne s'accordant que de brefs repos, jusqu'à atteindre la Chine.
