Nov. 26--Andrew Thiel wants McClintock Middle School to prove that middle-class flight isn't irreversible. But he knows that when it comes to schools, the middle ground between suburban prosperity and urban poverty is eroding.
McClintock sits in a naturally diverse area, between largely affluent Myers Park and east Charlotte, which is home to some of the most impoverished parts of the city. . It entered the neighborhood-school era in 2002 with just over 400 white students and almost the same number of blacks. Its poverty level was 47 percent.
