Bobi Wine and Sophie Gombya smiled as the flashing cameras clicked away. The two jointly held a dummy cheque - their earnings for songs downloaded as ring back tones. The pay out was made last week by True African, the web based IT company that pioneered Uganda's first web to phone SMS service. The Spear House-based company is now offering artistes avenues to make money from their music.

For the uninitiated, ring back tones or RBTs allow mobile phone users to choose the sound callers hear while they wait for an answer and are quickly providing a new twist to the ring tone explosion. Here is how it works: a subscriber …
