Nov. 17--Whoever controls the heavens controls the world, and the United States can't afford to be defenseless. But the wording of a revision to the U.S. National Space Policy, which was declassified last month, has put the international community on edge. World leaders read between the lines that the U.S. plans to base weapons in space but prevent other nations from doing the same. "United States national security is critically dependent upon space capabilities and this dependence will grow," the policy says. It appropriately compares access to space with the important national-security access to the seas and airspace.
