R.S. THOMAS, by the time he died in 2000, was probably the pre-eminent poet in Britain. He ad spent his working life as an Anglican priest in various rural parishes in northern Wales, preaching to small congregations in that largely Nonconformist nation. After paying to have his first volumes published, in his forties he came to the public eye when Rupert Hart-Davis published Song at the Year's Turning in 1955. He continued writing prolifically until his death.
