This is it. The final Evo installment before the all-new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X arrives sometime in 2007 or early 2008.
In its 14-year lifespan, this Lancer model has evolved through a total of 14 iterations. This very last Evo IX Mitsubishi Racing model is further honed with an even more precise driving experience via a retuned Active Yaw Control system and stiffer springs and dampers. The ride height is lowered 10 millimeters for tighter body control.
We flogged the Evo IX on some involving mountain roads in Japan, and it didn't disappoint. The Evo IX is about grip-lots of it-thanks in part to its sticky Yokohama tires. The enormous reserves of adhesion let you dig deep into the four-cylinder turbo's virtually infinite torque and use its explosive acceleration to the fullest. There are few cars today that can cover tight mountain roads at the same speed and with the same ease as an Evo.
