The collection of former Los Angeles Times publisher Otis Chandler evolved over the years along with the interests of the man, from classics and motorcycles to muscle cars and racing Porsches. When the celebrated publisher died earlier this year, his cars and motorcycles were mostly of the classic variety. The monetary value of that collection was set on Oct. 21, and it exceeded everyone's expectations-$36 million for 90 cars and motorcycles, showing that the collector car market is not only healthy, it might be using illegal steroids.

Nine cars sold for more than $1 million, and there were two that topped $2 million. We happened to be there when the bidding started on the 1931 Duesenberg Model J with coachwork by LeBaron. The auctioneer started the bidding at $600,000, and immediately in the audience to his left a voice cried out, "One MILLION dollars!''

Things went up from there, in increments of $100,000, until the madness stopped at $2.4 million. With auctioneer's fees, the out-the-door price was $2.64 million.
