Nov. 15--First the good news: 86 percent of Kansas schools made the grade this year, according to a preliminary list released by the state's Department of Education today.
The bad news? The number of schools and districts that failed to make "Adequate Yearly Progress" under the mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind Act nearly doubled from last year.
Among the 36 districts that didn't hit the target for AYP are De Soto, Olathe and Shawnee Mission in Johnson County, Kansas City, Kan., and Turner in Wyandotte County, and Leavenworth and Tonganoxie in Leavenworth County.
Across the state, 195 public schools, including 57 in the Kansas City area, didn't make the grade.
