Nov. 14--Another scandal has gripped the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, this one, according to accusations in a federal report, involving a kickback scheme with a group of cardiologists.
Perhaps more important, the university has been accused of covering up the scheme, which would violate an earlier agreement with the U.S. Attorney that allowed UMDNJ to avoid prosecution for Medicaid fraud.
U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said he was "particularly disturbed" that the agreement had been broken, though he did not say what action he would take against the university.
"We will be addressing remediation of that situation... in the very near future," he said.
UMDNJ entered into a deferred prosecution agreement last December, in part, because a conviction for Medicaid fraud could have forced the closure of its teaching hospital, University Hospital in Newark. UMDNJ has five campuses, including the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, Camden County, and a $1.6 billion budget.
