Our Sept. 25 report on China's image problem caused some readers to rush to Beijing's defense. One reminded us, "China doesn't have an expansionist agenda. It's not disturbing the world by harping on democracy." Retorted another, "The true myopia is inside the Bush administration."

Joshua Cooper Ramo's article "An Image Emergency" (Sept. 25) nails it right on the head, but he could be speaking about the wrong country. People everywhere tend to look at their own actions and motivations in the very best light and suspect the rationalizations of others. China may be blind about this at the moment, but the true myopia is, of course, inside the Bush administration. ...
