In 1737-8 Telemann spent several months in Paris, where the court applauded his music and he was granted a royal publishing privilege. The Essercizii musici were published a year later in Hamburg, and were, in fact, the last works to be published by the composer himself. Werke mit obligatem Cembalo aus den Essercizii musici (Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, 05472 77169 2, rec 1992) provides a generous selection of two keyboard solos and four trios for different combinations of instruments. Telemann may well have heard Rameau's celebrated Pieces de clavecin en concerts during his trip to Paris, for these trio sonatas from the Essercizii musici follow Rameau's lead in their use of an …
