Nov. 11--LINCOLN -- Cambridge had a fast start and overcame a second-game dip in confidence to beat No. 2 Axtell in four games Friday in the first round of the Class D-1 state volleyball tournament. The No. 5 Trojans (22-6) claimed their first tournament win since their 1993 Class C-1 championship season 25-12, 23-25, 26-24, 27-25 at Pershing Center. Axtell (24-2) had beaten them twice this season, each match going the distance, including last week's district final. "We watched a lot of film," Trojans coach Judy Mousel said. "Our plan was to serve more aggressively and we had to have the block. You could see we did when they started tipping shots." Other first-round winners at Pershing were top-ranked Freeman, No. 3 Humphrey St. Francis and No. 4 Mead. Today's 9:30 a.m. final for Class D-2 is the first of six at the NU Coliseum. Axtell coach Brad Nelson said he could tell the difference in the Trojans, whom he said played better on defense Friday than his team.
