2056: What Future for Maggie's Children?, a report published in October, is based on the premise that those born between 1980 and 1995 are an unlucky generation. Conservative think-tank the Policy Exchange and charity Age Concern have compiled demographic projections and studies, and invited commentators to recommend policies to help this generation in future.
'Maggie's children', born during the years that span the four terms of Conservative government under Margaret Thatcher and John Major, face the pressures of paying off student debts, struggling to get on to the housing ladder and difficulty saving for a comfortable retirement, according to the report. And the continuing breakdown of the family suggests increasing numbers will live alone in old age.
The report combines existing evidence from various sources, including the Office of National Statistics, the House of Commons library and numerous studies from the voluntary sector.
