Nov. 8--NEW HAVEN -- Two Democrats sailed into office unopposed Tuesday in special elections for the Board of Aldermen, while a contentious race in Fair Haven's 14th Ward ended with Erin Sturgis Pascale as the victor. Probably.
Sturgis Pascale received 464 votes at the poll, to Evelyn DeJesus Vargas' 361. While 170 absentee ballots remained uncounted at press time, it would take a major turn of events to turn the tables for DeJesus Vargas.
She could have to win 80 percent of the absentee votes to pull out a victory.
Former Democratic Alderman Joseph Jolly resigned in September to attend law school at Cornell University and Sturgis Pascale won the ward committee's party endorsement. DeJesus Vargas challenged the actions of the ward committee before the Democratic State Central Committee but her complaint was ruled unfounded. She also sought an injunction in court but the case was dismissed because of filing errors.
DeJesus Vargas lost to Jolly last year in the Democratic primary.
In the days leading up to election day, both candidates and their volunteers pushed hard to get out the vote.
