Nov. 8--Republican U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes and Democratic challenger Larry Kissell waited late into the night for results in an excruciatingly close race for the 8th District seat.
With all but one precinct reporting, Hayes was leading 50.7 percent to 49.3 percent, a margin of fewer than 1,700 votes, according to The Associated Press.
Hayes, who lives in Concord, led by large margins in Cabarrus and Stanly counties. Kissell led in Mecklenburg, Richmond, Montgomery, Scotland, Hoke and Anson counties. Union County was nearly even.
"Literally, too close to call," said Steve Hudson, Kissell's spokesman.
